About This Program

Arabic With AMAU is a brand-new programme, designed from the ground up, to make learning the Arabic language as easy and efficient as possible.

Taking advantage of modern language learning theory, as well as the latest tools and technology, the programme is divided into:

  • Vocabulary. Words are carefully chosen to give you the most important and frequently used Arabic words at each stage in your learning. Vocabulary is presented as picture flashcards to help you remember and test yourself on the words that you learn. Vocabulary can be learnt at the pace that suits you - go as fast or as slow as you like.
  • Language Lessons. Short and simple videos without any complex explanation of grammar. The idea is to take language lessons slowly, getting as much practice out of each lesson as you can. In our syllabus, the emphasis is on the lessons which give you the most benefit at each stage in your learning.
  • Learn by Example. People learn languages by exposure to that language. We present a collection of written and audio-visual content, which showcases your vocabulary and language lessons through real-world examples.
  • Tools and Tests. We provide regular online exams to help you measure your progress, and identify any areas needing improvement. We also provide access to online tools that will help you in learning the language. We are working towards supporting our students with tools for speaking and conversation online in the near future, in shā’ Allāh.

Who Is This Program For?

  •  This programme is ideally suited to those who want to learn Arabic on a part-time basis online. It is well suited to both adults and children. Previous experience of learning Arabic is not required. We even teach the Arabic alphabet for those who are not yet able to read. Don't worry if you have tried to learn Arabic before without success – our approach is considerably different to most other courses.
  •  If you already have a good grasp of the language, and are able to read a book or listen to a lecture, perhaps with the help of a dictionary, then it is likely that you will already have covered many of the language lessons that we teach. At the same time, you may well benefit from the vocabulary and learn by example lessons.
  •  For those looking for advanced Arabic grammar, this is taught in our Student of Knowledge Program, separate from our Arabic course. This is based on the principle that advanced grammar is really meant for those who already speak the language, and isn't a language learning tool.

Syllabus

You will learn how to read, write and pronounce Arabic correctly. You will become comfortable with a wide range of simple sentences, made up of two or three words, and then use them as building blocks to make longer sentences later on. You will learn your first 500 words, with plenty of examples of how to use them, including some of the most common words found in the Qur’ān and Sunnah, as well as important themes in daily life. By the end of this stage, you should be able to read a storybook written for a young child, and be comfortable understanding a wide range of common situations, such as getting to know someone or following instructions in a classroom.

You will build upon what you have learnt, with a deeper understanding of the language that has been introduced, and a wider range of vocabulary, building up to around 1500 words, along with plenty of examples of how to use them. You will begin to develop the skills needed to express yourself, rather than just being able to listen and understand. By the end of this stage, you should be able to read a more detailed storybook, and begin to be able to express yourself in a wide range of common situations. You will also begin to become more and more comfortable with language that you have not seen before.

We will work towards being able to read a relatively simple Islamic book or text, and to be able to follow the main theme and key points of an audio lecture. This requires vocabulary in the range of 3000 words, as well as a good grasp of the main features of the language. At this stage, you might miss out on some more complex words, or difficult sentences, but you have a strong working knowledge of the language, and begin to show independence in learning. At this stage, you should be comfortable expressing yourself, even if you don't know the right words for every situation.

In your third year and beyond, we work towards developing fluency in the language, learning to vastly increase your vocabulary through understanding the way that words are formed in Arabic, as well as picking up on details and nuances in the language. Your reading level increases to be able to manage all kinds of prose, as well as an introduction to poetry, and you can read an average Islamic book comfortably, with the help of a dictionary. You can also express yourself comfortably, both in speech and writing, and develop a sense of different accents and dialects. You should aim to have reached between 6,000-9,000 words. At this stage, you are ready to learn advanced Arabic grammar in Arabic, going on to study the finer points of grammar as explained to native speakers.
